Wearing braces doesn’t sound very appealing to most people. It’s uncomfortable, it’s inconvenient to brush, and you’re not allowed to eat a lot of things. Fortunately, this is only the case with traditional braces and you won’t have to deal with all these inconveniences with aligners from Invisalign.
What can’t you eat when wearing a traditional brace?
When you wear a traditional metal brace, there are many things you cannot eat. You should be careful with hard things like apples, carrots, nuts, hard candy, hard breads, etc. Sticky things like wine gums, licorice and gum are a real no-go. And the restrictions don’t stop at food. Carbonated drinks and very sweet drinks are also bad for your braces. You should be very frugal with candy, cookies and chocolate anyway. You should only eat sweets once a day at most.
What should you not eat when you are using aligners?
We can answer this question nice and short: nothing. There is nothing you cannot eat while wearing aligners. This is because you take the aligners off when you eat something. We do recommend that you brush your teeth every time you eat, so that you always slide your aligners over clean teeth. What you do need to be a little careful with when wearing aligners is drinks with lots of dyes, such as red wine. These can discolor your transparent braces. We also recommend taking the aligners off when you drink sweet drinks.
You should wear your braces at least 20-22 hours a day. So try to take your aligners off as little as possible to eat and drink in a day. It’s best to drink water during the day, as you don’t need to take your braces off for that. When eating, take off your braces and drink whatever you want.
